Bradley has slammed the Labour Government for scrapping Winter Fuel Payments for thousands of pensioners in Bromsgrove and the Villages.
On Monday (July 29th), the Chancellor announced that those not on Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits will no longer receive the annual payment to help pay their heating bills.
Age UK has estimated that around 20,000 pensioners in Bromsgrove and the Villages will lose between £100 and £300 in support from this autumn.
There are 1,517 households in Bromsgrove in receipt of Pension Credit who will continue to receive the Winter Fuel Payment. However, based on the national average, Age UK estimates there are an additional 891 households in the constituency who are eligible for Pension Credit but are not claiming it and who will lose the Winter Fuel Payment.
Bradley said:
“The Chancellor’s shameful decision to scrap Winter Fuel Payments for thousands of pensioners in my constituency is unjustifiable. Those who have worked hard and paid into the system deserve to have a comfortable retirement.
“This is from a Labour Party that time and time again claimed pensioners were choosing between eating and heating – and now they’ve taken vital support away from people they claimed to care about.
“There are many pensioners in our constituency who don’t claim Pension Credit when they’re eligible for this support. I would urge pensioners to check if this support is available to them by visiting: https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit.”
